About Master Omura Fujikiyo and Omura Dojo เกี่ยวกับอาจารย์โอมูระ ฟูจิคิโยะ และโอมูระโดโจ 大村藤清師範と大村道場について

Master Omura Fujikiyo

Omura Fujikiyo Shihan
大村藤清師範
8th Dan JKA · (1953–2023)

Omura Dojo is part of the Thai Karate Shotokan Association (TKSA), an officially-recognized organisation of the Japan Karate Association (JKA). It was established by Omura Fujikiyo Shihan (1953–2023), 8th Dan, Japan Karate Association.

Master Omura was the Father of Shotokan Karate in Thailand - a true embodiment of the JKA Karate spirit, and a highly respected teacher who devoted his life to sharing the art with the Thai people for over 30 years.

A graduate of Takushoku University in Japan and a JKA headquarters instructor under Master Nakayama Masatoshi (the first JKA Chief Instructor), Master Omura brought a global perspective to his teaching. He was a champion on the world stage - achieving 1st place in the IAKF World Karate Championship in 1977 and 1980, and the JKA All Japan Karate Championship in 1979.

Beyond his accolades, Master Omura's true impact lies in the lives he touched. He nurtured countless Karate practitioners, sharing not just technique but also the values of discipline, respect, and perseverance. His memory continues to inspire generations of students in Thailand and beyond, carrying forward the spirit of JKA Karate he so passionately championed.

Omura Dojo carries on Master Omura's legacy. All of its instructors are long-time students of Master Omura. We train traditional Karate-Do in a supportive and fun environment for students as young as 5 years old up to 80 years old. Practitioners from karate schools other than JKA are also welcome.

"The Karate-Do [the "Way" of Karate] pursued by the Japan Karate Association is not simply about winning competitions or building a stronger body. The ultimate purpose of training is to expand one's own potential through self-directed learning and disciplined practice, and to strive toward the perfection of character.

Through the repeated practice of fundamental techniques - strikes, kicks, and blocks - in Kihon [basics] training; through Kata, which combines various movements in all directions; and through Kumite, where practitioners face each other and exchange offensive and defensive techniques - the accumulation of this dedicated training develops an efficient and rational use of the body.

Equally important is the cultivation of courtesy and proper conduct, expressed in the principle "[Karate] begins with courtesy and ends with courtesy," as well as the observance of dojo customs such as bowing to the dojo upon entering and leaving. In this way, the JKA actively carries forward the traditions and culture of Japanese martial arts.

Practitioners of all generations and genders, with different levels of experience and ability, train together in a spirit of mutual support. The dojo of the Japan Karate Association is a place where trust and respect for one another are deepened."

– From the website of the Japan Karate Association Headquarters, Tokyo, Japan.

Footnote · หมายเหตุ * Rei - Rei refers to "bow" (Ojigi お辞儀) or "salutation" and is a central part of Japanese culture and Karate-Do practice. Much like the wai in Thailand, or a handshake or a hug in the West, Rei (or Ojigi "bow") conveys greeting, respect, and connection in Japan.

When practicing Rei in standing, keep your back straight and bend from the hips, with hands at your sides. When bowing from Seiza (formal kneeling), slide your hands forward to form a triangle shape on the floor in front of your knees, then lower your upper body toward your hands while keeping your back straight, without sitting up on your heels. The depth of the bow signals formality: a small nod suits casual moments, while deeper bows suit thanks or apologies.

On eye contact: in formal settings, including in Omura Dojo, staring at the other person can be read as a sign of distrust or defiance - so glance briefly, then lower your gaze as you bow. In casual greetings in Japan, maintaining eye contact when bowing is perfectly fine and reads as friendly.

Footnote · หมายเหตุ * Shōmen ni rei - Bow to the Front / Kamiza. Kamiza means "seat/place of honor." The front wall of the dojo, considered the most honoured position in the room. In Japan, it typically displays the Japanese/JKA flag, a portrait of the Shotokan Karate/JKA founders such as Funakoshi Gichin and Nakayama Masatoshi Shihan, or the Dojo Kun.

At Omura Dojo, bowing to the front - the Kamiza - is how students honor the art's origins, Omura Sensei, the people of Thailand, and everyone who helped bring them to the dojo today. The Kamiza is also sometimes the place where dignitaries are seated, such as masters and honorary guests.

Many dojos in Japan - including the JKA Headquarters - use the command Shinzen ni rei (神前に礼) instead, meaning "Bow to the Shinzen." The Shinzen (神前), whose direct translation is "before the God," often refers to a miniature Shinto altar, a sacred shelf displaying offerings and a symbol of the deity of martial arts(武道の神様), if the dojo has one.

About the Dojo Kun · เกี่ยวกับโดโจคุน
English

The Dojo Kun (道場訓) - Training Hall Principles, or Moral Codes of Conduct for Karate Practitioners - is recited in JKA dojos around the world, including Omura Dojo.

It was compiled by the first JKA Chief Instructor, Nakayama Masatoshi Shihan, drawing on the teachings of Shotokan Karate founder, Funakoshi Gichin Shihan.

The Five Principles · หลักปฏิบัติทั้งห้า
1
Seek perfection of character.
มุ่งมั่นพัฒนาตนเองให้มีคุณธรรมและบุคลิกภาพที่สมบูรณ์
2
Be faithful and sincere.
ยึดมั่นในความจริงใจ ซื่อสัตย์ และซื่อตรง
3
Cultivate the spirit of perseverance.
หล่อหลอมจิตใจให้มีความมุ่งมั่น อดทน และไม่ย่อท้อต่ออุปสรรค
4
Respect others and observe proper etiquette.
ให้เกียรติผู้อื่น และประพฤติตนด้วยความสุภาพตามมารยาทอันเหมาะสม
5
Refrain from violent or uncontrolled behavior.
รู้จักยับยั้งตนเอง และไม่ใช้อารมณ์หรือความรุนแรงโดยขาดการควบคุม
The first principle - Seek perfection of character - is the ultimate goal, while the remaining four provide the means to achieve it.

True Karate-Do extends far beyond mastering techniques alone. Observing dojo etiquette, such as bowing at the entrance and exit and showing respect to Sensei and fellow practitioners, is an essential expression of the Karate spirit. Karate-Do is a lifelong commitment to becoming a better human being - in every thought, word, and action, both inside and outside the dojo.

You may notice that none of the Dojo Kun mention technique or defeating an opponent. This is because in Karate-Do (the "Way" of Karate), our ultimate opponent is ourselves. Every kick, punch, and block is a tool for mastering our own mind and body, requiring focus, discipline, and perseverance.

This principle is at the heart of traditional Karate-Do as practiced at Omura Dojo. It is rooted in Budo, a lifelong path of self-cultivation, discipline, and moral conduct.

This is what distinguishes Karate-Do from sport karate, which focuses on earning match points and defeating an opponent. Sport karate plays an important role in attracting and motivating people to begin training, though as an athletic competition, it is something most people eventually step away from as they age.

Karate-Do, by comparison, is a way of living that continues to shape who you are. Both traditional and sport karate hold real value; they simply serve different purposes.

"Karate-Do is a way to self-realization."
"คาราเต้-โด คือเส้นทางแห่งการค้นพบตัวเอง"

Footnote · หมายเหตุ 一 (Hitotsu) - In Japanese, Hitotsu means "one" in number counting. However, in the Dojo Kun it is used as a traditional prefix meaning "first and foremost" or "above all." Each principle begins with 一 (Hitotsu) to emphasize that all five precepts are of equal and primary importance - none ranks above another. This reflects the holistic nature of Karate training, where character, sincerity, perseverance, respect, and self-control are all essential and inseparable.

Explanations · คำอธิบาย
Principle 1 · หลักที่ 1
Jinkaku kansei ni tsutomuru koto
人格完成に努むること

Seek Perfection of Characterมุ่งมั่นพัฒนาตนเองให้มีคุณธรรมและบุคลิกภาพที่สมบูรณ์

This is the highest objective of Karate-Do. Karate is a lifelong path of self-improvement and personal development, extending far beyond self-defense or physical exercise.

To seek perfection of character means striving to become a person who:

  • are sincere and genuine in both words and deeds
  • Respects others
  • Remains calm under pressure
  • Exercises self-discipline
  • Continues to grow throughout life

The ultimate purpose of Karate is to develop strong character, beyond strong technique alone.

Word Breakdown · ความหมายของแต่ละคำ
Jinkaku人格 = Character / Personality / Human character
= บุคลิกภาพ / ลักษณะนิสัย
Kansei完成 = Completion / Perfection / Accomplishment
= ความสมบูรณ์ / การบรรลุเป้าหมาย
Tsutomuru努むる = To strive / To endeavor / To make effort
= มุ่งมั่นพยายาม / ทุ่มเท
Kotoこと = Nominalizer - turns the preceding phrase into a guiding principle or matter to be upheld
= คำที่เปลี่ยนวลีข้างหน้าให้กลายเป็นหลักปฏิบัติหรือสิ่งที่ต้องยึดถือ
Principle 2 · หลักที่ 2
Makoto no michi wo mamoru koto
誠の道を守ること

Be Faithful and Sincereยึดมั่นในความจริงใจ ซื่อสัตย์ และซื่อตรง

Sincerity means being honest, trustworthy, and genuine in both words and actions. This principle encourages practitioners to:

  • Tell the truth
  • Keep their promises
  • Act with integrity
  • Be consistent between what they say and what they do

A karateka (i.e. a Karate practitioner) should demonstrate sincerity not only in the dojo, but also at home, at school, at work, and in everyday life.

Word Breakdown · ความหมายของแต่ละคำ
Makoto誠 = Sincerity / Truth / Genuineness
= ความจริงใจ / ความซื่อสัตย์

Principle 3 · หลักที่ 3
Doryoku no seishin wo yashinau koto
努力の精神を養うこと

Cultivate the Spirit of Perseveranceหล่อหลอมจิตใจให้มีความมุ่งมั่น อดทน และไม่ย่อท้อต่ออุปสรรค

Progress in Karate comes through consistent effort rather than natural talent alone. This principle teaches the importance of:

  • Dedication
  • Patience
  • Determination
  • Persistence in the face of difficulties

Through regular training and continuous practice, students develop both technical skill and mental strength.

Word Breakdown · ความหมายของแต่ละคำ
Doryoku努力 = Effort / Endeavor / Exertion
= ความพยายาม / ความอุตสาหะ
Seishin精神 = Spirit / Mind / Willpower
= จิตใจ / จิตวิญญาณ / พลังใจ
Yashinau養う = To cultivate / To nurture / To foster
= บ่มเพาะ / หล่อเลี้ยง
Kotoこと = Nominalizer - turns the preceding phrase into a guiding principle or matter to be upheld
= คำที่เปลี่ยนวลีข้างหน้าให้กลายเป็นหลักปฏิบัติหรือสิ่งที่ต้องยึดถือ
Principle 4 · หลักที่ 4
Reigi wo omonzuru koto
礼儀を重んずること

Respect Others and Observe Proper Etiquetteให้เกียรติผู้อื่น และประพฤติตนด้วยความสุภาพตามมารยาทอันเหมาะสม

"Karate begins with courtesy and ends with courtesy."
"คาราเต้เริ่มต้นด้วยความสุภาพและสิ้นสุดด้วยความสุภาพ"
– Funakoshi Gichin Shihan (松濤二十訓)

Etiquette is an expression of respect for others and a way to cultivate humility and self-control, beyond formal ritual. Examples include:

  • Bowing properly
  • Showing respect to instructors and fellow students
  • Maintaining correct dojo manners, including bowing to the dojo when entering and exiting
  • Demonstrating gratitude and consideration toward others

In traditional martial arts, true strength is expected to be accompanied by humility and respect.

In competition, victory is not an occasion for celebration at the opponent's expense. In keeping with the spirit of Respecting Others and Observing Proper Etiquette, winners are expected to refrain from outward displays of excitement - such as victory gestures or shouting "Yes!" - in front of a defeated opponent, out of respect for the defeated person. This standard of etiquette extends beyond Karate to other Budo disciplines, including Judo, Kendo, Aikido, and Sumo.

Word Breakdown · ความหมายของแต่ละคำ
Reigi礼儀 = Etiquette / Courtesy / Manners
= มารยาท / ความสุภาพ / การให้เกียรติ
Omonzuru重んずる = To respect / To value / To hold in high regard
= เคารพ / ให้ความสำคัญ
Kotoこと = Nominalizer - turns the preceding phrase into a guiding principle or matter to be upheld
= คำที่เปลี่ยนวลีข้างหน้าให้กลายเป็นหลักปฏิบัติหรือสิ่งที่ต้องยึดถือ
Principle 5 · หลักที่ 5
Kekki no yū wo imashimuru koto
血気の勇を戒むること

Refrain from Violent or Uncontrolled Behaviorรู้จักยับยั้งตนเอง และไม่ใช้อารมณ์หรือความรุนแรงโดยขาดการควบคุม

It warns against acting impulsively out of anger, aggression, pride, or a desire to dominate others. It encourages practitioners to:

  • Control their emotions
  • Avoid unnecessary conflict
  • Remain calm and composed
  • Use strength responsibly
"There is no first attack in Karate."
"ในคาราเต้ไม่มีการโจมตีก่อน"
– Funakoshi Gichin Shihan

True strength lies not in overpowering others, but in mastering oneself.

This is why every Kata in Shotokan Karate begins with a defensive technique - a block. It is a physical expression of this very principle: that true strength is never the first to strike.

Word Breakdown · ความหมายของแต่ละคำ

Footnote · หมายเหตุ Kiai (気合) - Kiai literally means "spirit meeting" or "unified energy," combining 気 (ki, spirit/energy) and 合 (ai, meeting/union). It is the sharp shout karateka make at the moment of executing a technique, most often heard at key points in a kata or when finishing a strike.

Its purpose is both physical and mental.

Physically, a forceful exhale tightens the core and diaphragm, adding power and stability to the technique while momentarily bracing the body against a counterattack - this also helps bring energy and focus to the Seika tanden, the body's physical and energetic center.

Mentally, it channels focus and intent into the moment, signaling full commitment to the technique. It can also startle or intimidate an opponent.

Footnote · หมายเหตุ The number 4 (四) has two pronunciations:
1. Shi - used in counting and technical terms, including Kata Nijushiho (二十四歩, "24 steps") and Gojushiho (五十四歩, "54 steps").
2. Yon - everyday reading, used standalone and in most compounds (e.g. Heian Yondan, 4th dan

Note · หมายเหตุ Shodan (初段) - Shodan literally means "first step," indicating the true beginning of the journey of Karate-Do. Earning a black belt is not the end - it is where the real training begins.

โชดัน (初段) - โชดันแปลตรงตัวว่า "ก้าวแรก" ซึ่งหมายถึงจุดเริ่มต้นที่แท้จริงของคาราเต้-โด การได้รับสายดำไม่ใช่จุดสิ้นสุด - แต่เป็นจุดที่การฝึกจริงเริ่มต้นขึ้น
Footnote · หมายเหตุ Koshi - two different words, same spelling: 腰 (ko-SHI, hip/waist) and 虎趾 (KO-shi, ball of foot) are written differently in Japanese but share the same romanisation. They are distinguished by emphasis: Ko-SHI腰 (hip) places the stress on shi, while KO-shi虎趾 (ball of foot) places the stress on ko. Listen to the difference below:

Footnote · หมายเหตุ Tachi vs Dachi - In Karate, tachi (立ち) means "standing" or "stance," while dachi (立ち) refers to a specific stance or standing position. The word dachi is always used as a suffix after the name of a stance, whereas tachi is used as a prefix and not used on its own.

Both tachi and dachi come from the same Japanese word 立ち (tachi), or 立つ (tatsu = to stand/rise). When it follows another word, the initial t often changes to d due to a common Japanese sound change called rendaku (連濁). This is why kiba + tachi becomes kiba-dachi, and zenkutsu + tachi becomes zenkutsu-dachi.

Tachikata (立ち方) means "the way of standing" or "how to assume a stance." (Kata here means "method" or "way," which is different from Kata (form/pre-determined movements), although they are pronounced the same.) Neither tachi nor dachi is used on its own.

Shizentai and Hachiji dachi - Shizentai and Hachiji dachi are often used interchangeably.

ชิเซนไตและฮาจิจิดาจิ - ชิเซนไตและฮาจิจิดาจิมักใช้แทนกันได้
Footnote · หมายเหตุ Re no ji dachi is not actually shaped like an L. The back foot turns out at about 45 degrees - not 90 degrees - so the stance more closely resembles the Japanese katakana character レ (re).

เรโนจิดาจิ ไม่ได้มีรูปร่างเหมือนตัว L จริงๆ เท้าหลังจะบิดออกประมาณ 45 องศา ไม่ใช่ 90 องศา ทำให้ท่านี้มีลักษณะใกล้เคียงกับตัวอักษรคาตากานะญี่ปุ่น レ (เระ) มากกว่า

Footnote · หมายเหตุ Uke (受け or ukeru 受ける) - In Japanese, uke (受け or ukeru 受ける) literally means "to receive." Rather than forcefully stopping an attack head-on - as the English word "block" may suggest - uke refers to receiving, redirecting, or deflecting the incoming attack. The emphasis is on controlling the attack efficiently rather than meeting it with equal force.

Otoshi uke and Osae uke are sometimes used interchangeably.

Footnote · หมายเหตุ Tsuki vs Zuki - The word 突き is pronounced Tsuki when used as a standalone term. When combined with a preceding word (such as an adjective or modifier), it changes to Zuki due to a phonetic rule in Japanese called rendaku (sequential voicing). Zuki is never used on its own - it only appears as part of a compound term (e.g. Gyaku zuki, Oi zuki).

Seiken zuki vs Choku zuki - Seiken zuki is the broader category of punches using the forefist (i.e. the index and middle knuckles). Choku zuki usually refers to the fundamental straight thrusting action.

เซเค็น ซุกิ vs โชคุ ซุกิ - เซเค็น ซุกิ คือหมวดหมู่กว้างของการชกโดยใช้กำปั้นหน้า (คือ ปุ่มกระดูกข้อนิ้วชี้และนิ้วกลาง) ส่วนโชคุ ซุกิ มักหมายถึงการพุ่งชกตรงในรูปแบบพื้นฐาน
Footnote · หมายเหตุ Jun zuki and Oi zuki - Jun zuki and Oi zuki mean the same and are used interchangeably.

จุน ซุกิ และ โอ้ย ซุกิ - จุน ซุกิ และ โอ้ย ซุกิ มีความหมายเหมือนกันและใช้แทนกันได้

Footnote · หมายเหตุ Keri vs Geri - The word 蹴り is pronounced Keri when used as a standalone term. When combined with a preceding word, it changes to Geri due to rendaku (sequential voicing) - a phonetic rule in Japanese.

A word of caution - never say 'Geri' on its own in Japan - you won't sound like a karateka, you'll sound like someone desperately looking for a restroom. In Japanese, standalone Geri means diarrhea!! 😱🚽 So always pair it with a kick name and save yourself the embarrassment!

Kaku uses a Japanese character that means a crane - Gankaku means "crane on a rock"
คาคุ ใช้อักษรญี่ปุ่นที่แปลว่า นกกระเรียน - กันคาคุ หมายถึง "นกกระเรียนบนโขดหิน"
🐦
Empi (kata) 燕飛
"Flying swallow" - sounds identical to Empi (elbow strike), but a totally different animal
"นกนางแอ่นบิน" - ออกเสียงเหมือนกับ Empi (elbow strike) แต่เป็นสัตว์คนละชนิดกัน
🐒
Empi (elbow strike) 猿臂
"Monkey elbow strike" - sounds identical to Empi (kata), but a totally different animal
"ท่าศอกลิง" - ออกเสียงเหมือนกับ Empi (kata) แต่เป็นสัตว์คนละชนิดกัน
Kata Unsu's secret
Five animals in one kata!! สัตว์ห้าชนิดในคะตะเดียว!!
Unsu is basically a runaway zoo: a horse 🐴, a cat 🐱, a chicken 🐔, a dragon 🐉, and a tiger 🐯 all show up in one kata. No wonder this Kata is so busy and bouncy!!
อุนสุเปรียบเสมือนสวนสัตว์แตก: ม้า 🐴 แมว 🐱 ไก่ 🐔 มังกร 🐉 และเสือ 🐯 ล้วนปรากฏอยู่ในคะตะเดียว ไม่แปลกใจเลยที่คะตะนี้จะวุ่นวายและเด้งดึ๋งขนาดนี้!!

🥋 Kata is different from a dance - although it looks like it!

Memorising the sequence alone is therefore not enough when practising Kata. Every movement in Kata carries tactical purpose - each strike, block, step, and posture is a response to an imagined opponent.

Footnote · หมายเหตุ * Dai and Shō - Although the suffixes "Dai" (大) and "Shō" (小) translate literally as "big/major" and "small/minor" respectively, they do not imply any difference in size, difficulty, or quality between the kata. They are simply used to distinguish kata within the same family.

Zanshin refers to the state of sustained awareness and readiness that must be maintained even after a technique is completed. It is not the end of the action - it is the continuation of alertness and focus.

In Kata, Zanshin is expressed (1) towards/at the end of slow movements, and (2) in the final pose: the practitioner does not relax until the Kata is formally concluded.

In Kihon, Zanshin is the discipline of holding focus after the command "Yame/Naore" and slowly returning to Shizen tai, rather than relaxing and rushing to Shizen tai immediately.

In Kumite, it is the readiness to defend or follow up immediately after scoring, keeping Kamae (ready posture) rather than turning your back or lowering the guard.

Zanshin is practised throughout Japan, not only in Karate and other martial arts but also in everyday life. It reflects a mindset of remaining alert, attentive, and considerate even after completing an action.

A familiar example is how hosts see off their guests. Rather than simply saying goodbye at the door, they often accompany their guests outside and continue waving until they are completely out of sight. This gesture demonstrates that their care and attention do not end with the farewell but continue until the guests have safely departed. This enduring awareness and consideration embody the spirit of zanshin.

Advanced Practice · การฝึกขั้นสูง
To truly practise Kata, practitioners - particularly advanced ones - need to understand why each movement exists, what it is designed to achieve, and how to execute it with that intention in mind.
เพื่อฝึกคะตะอย่างแท้จริง ผู้ฝึก โดยเฉพาะผู้ที่มีระดับสูง จำเป็นต้องเข้าใจว่า เหตุใด การเคลื่อนไหวแต่ละท่าจึงมีอยู่ มีไว้เพื่ออะไร และ จะแสดงออกมาด้วยเจตนานั้นอย่างไร
Are you ready to go beyond the sequence? 🥋
คุณพร้อมที่จะก้าวข้ามการจดจำลำดับท่าแล้วหรือยัง? 🥋

The Three Essentials of Kata · 形の三要諦
สามสาระสำคัญของคะตะ
A fundamental concept in JKA Shotokan Karate that provides the framework for deeper understanding. Mastering these three principles transforms Kata from a memorised sequence into a living, breathing expression of martial art.
แนวคิดพื้นฐานในคาราเต้สายโชโตกัน JKA ที่เป็นกรอบสำหรับความเข้าใจที่ลึกซึ้งยิ่งขึ้น การเชี่ยวชาญหลักการทั้งสามนี้เปลี่ยนคะตะจากลำดับท่าที่จดจำไว้ ให้กลายเป็นการแสดงออกของศิลปะการต่อสู้ที่มีชีวิตและลมหายใจ
力の強弱
Chikara no kyōjaku
จิกะระ โนะ เคียว-จา-คุ
Variation of Power
ความหนักเบาของพลัง
Every technique in Kata must not be performed with equal force throughout. Some movements require explosive, full power, while others are deliberately light or controlled. This contrast - strong and weak - gives each technique its meaning and effectiveness. A Kata performed at constant intensity loses its martial purpose and becomes mere exercise.
Tai no shinshuku
ไต โนะ ชิน-ชุ-คุ
Expansion and Contraction of the Body
การยืดและหดตัวของร่างกาย
The body must expand and contract naturally throughout Kata. Expansion opens the body to generate reach and power; contraction draws it in to protect, load energy, and prepare the next movement. This rhythmic breathing of the body - in and out - is what gives Kata its flow and its power.
Waza no kan'kyū
วา-ซะ โนะ คัน-คิว
Variation of Speed of the Techniques
ความเร็วช้าของเทคนิค
Not all techniques are performed at the same speed. Some are executed with sudden explosive speed; others are slow and controlled. This variation of tempo is not stylistic - it reflects the reality of combat, where timing and rhythm are as important as strength and technique.
